My work has just been awarded a contract for Joint Base San Antonio. I’ve been asked to go there for two weeks to help with asset location. I’ll be flying in on a Monday and leaving the Friday of the following week.

Is there anything in the area that I absolutely have to visit or places I need to eat. I will need to stay fairly close to base because any driving I do will be in a company vehicle.

Typically when they do this the weekend is yours to do with as you please, but the final decision on that is up to whoever is sent to run the transition team.

I don’t have exact dates yet, but once I know I’ll update here in case there are any interesting special events.

Definitely hit up the Alamo and the river walk.

One should always remember the Alamo

Do not forget the Menger Hotel. Oldest hotel west of the Mississippi. Grab a drink in the bar where Teddy Roosevelt recruited the Rough Riders. It’s also worth walking through La Villita. If you like old houses, there’s the King William area (I wouldn’t go, but my parents liked it). Mission San Jose probably is the second most popular mission to see. It’s been a long time since I was there, but I always thought the restaurants on the River Walk are merely ok. Mi Tierra is close to the River Walk, though, and used to be very good.

Since you are going to be there so long, pop up to Austin Saturday morning and stay over night . Go early enough to grab some BBQ for lunch, then hit the sights and finally spend Sat night on 6th Street .

I’ve heard good things about the river walk. Several people have said they were somewhat disappointed with the Alamo, but that being said I think it’s something I would be upset with myself  if I missed a chance to visit even if I’m not blown away.

I enjoy old homes but unless there was a walking tour to give some background I doubt I’d get much out of it.

Going somewhere overnight won’t be an option. I’ll have to drive a company vehicle and chances are there won’t be enough for everyone to be able to head out to do their own thing for more than a couple hours. I’m hopeful one of my coworkers will go because we have similar interests and if two wanted to take a truck for awhile it’ll be easier to make happen.

If you want some legit Texas BBQ, head over to Lockhart and eat at Kreuz’s. It’s about an hour from San Antonio.

Alamo. San Antonio zoo is one of the best in TX if you like zoos.  Fiesta Texas (Six Flags) does their Fright Fest if you are in to amusement parks.  El Mercado is you like cheap mexican stuff .

The riverwalk is worth doing. You can easily eat, drink and entertain yourself along it for an evening. That Alamo is worth walking through also, and it is right next the riverwalk at street level.

If you run into any off- duty Marines on the riverwalk (4th Recon Bn has it’s training pipeline based there), it is probably best to avoid them. They will be very, very intoxicated. Full disclosure, I’ve been one of those drunk Marines more than once, and the riverwalk was the si te of my most epic night of debauchery.

I’d at least try to get people to go up to Austin for Saturday evening. Should -- I repeat, should -- only be a 90 minute or so drive.

Of course, you already know the F1 race is 11/3!
